What is a Suspended Ceiling?
A suspended ceiling, also known as a drop ceiling or false ceiling, is a secondary ceiling that is installed below the main structural ceiling. It’s made up of a lightweight metal framework that supports ceiling tiles or panels, which can be made from materials such as gypsum, mineral fibre or metal.
Suspended ceilings are commonly used in commercial buildings, offices and industrial spaces to conceal electrical wiring, plumbing and ductwork while providing easy access for maintenance. They also enhance acoustic insulation, improve energy efficiency by reducing ceiling height and offer a polished, aesthetically pleasing finish.
What are Suspended Ceiling Tiles?
Suspended ceiling tiles are panels installed within an associated ceiling grid. Their main purpose is to provide a smooth surface and hide services such as pipes and wires within the ceiling void.
Your suspended ceiling system consists of multiple tiles, suspended from your existing ceiling soffit. The minimum amount of space needed between your ceiling panels and your ceiling soffit is 100mm.
What are Suspended Ceiling Tiles Made Of?
Suspended ceiling tiles can be metal, plasterboard or mineral fibre. Generally, mineral fibre is the most popular ceiling material as it combines an ideal balance of performance and affordability.
Did you know that the material of your ceiling tiles can influence their performance? It’s true. Different ceiling tile materials can optimise your workplace in different ways.
Mineral Fibre Ceiling Tiles
What are mineral fibre ceiling tiles made of:
Mineral fibre ceiling tiles are made from a mixture of natural and recycled materials, such as:
- Recycled newsprint
- Clay
- Perlite
- Mineral wool
- Starch
- Fibreglass
- Binding agent
Different quantities of these materials are mixed with a water-based solution and then cured and bound together. A larger quantity of fibreglass will create a softer ceiling tile with better sound absorption.
Harder ceiling tiles will have a larger quantity of clay and offer more advanced sound insulation.
Metal Ceiling Tiles
What are metal ceiling tiles made of:
Most metal suspended ceiling tiles are made from steel. A form of iron, this metal has added carbon to improve strength and durability – two great qualities you can expect from this type of ceiling panel.
Plasterboard Fibre Ceiling Tiles
What are plasterboard ceiling tiles made of:
Plasterboard ceiling tiles are made from gypsum (a sulfate mineral called calcium sulfate dihydrate). This type of suspended ceiling panel can have a vinyl face to create a smooth surface and a modern finish. Boards made from plasterboard are affordable and versatile.
Benefits of Suspended Ceilings
The wonderful thing about dropped ceilings is that you can decide which benefits you want to experience based on your suspended ceiling tiles. Different tiles will offer different properties, with advantages such as:
Cost Efficiency
Suspended ceilings are one of the most affordable systems to install. We know what you’re thinking, but don’t worry. The quality of your commercial ceiling isn’t compromised by price.
Better yet, should you need any replacement ceiling tiles in the future, you can avoid the expense of replacing the whole ceiling. Instead, you can remove and replace individual suspended ceiling tiles as required.
Acoustics
Need to improve privacy or contain the commotion in the office? There’s a ceiling tile for that. Every ceiling panel will offer a varying degree of acoustic protection – sound absorption, sound insulation, or both!
Sound absorbing ceiling tiles can damped noise by reducing sound reverberations that bounce off hard surfaces. If you struggle to communicate with your colleagues or experience echoing in the workplace, this is a great solution for you.
Sound insulating ceiling tiles can improve privacy by minimising room-to-room sound transfer. If you’re looking to create a confidential space or focus zone, this is a great solution for you.
Appearance
A suspended ceiling could help modernise your workplace. Our select ceiling tiles are available with different sizes, perforations, edge details and colours to suit your design requirements.
Insulation
Installing a suspended ceiling will naturally improve thermal insulation. This is because it reduces room height, trapping warm air below your tiles. A warmer workplace will mean you’re less reliant on heating and can even result in reduced energy bills.
If you’re still feeling the cold, we can offer free advice on the best ceiling insulation to accompany your ceiling panels.
Security
Suspended ceiling tiles provide security to the services they conceal within the ceiling void. Whenever you need access, simply dismantle individual tiles (there’s no need to remove the entire ceiling).
Wellbeing
The combination of better acoustics, thermal insulation and interior design can all contribute to the wellbeing of your staff. These qualities are one of many things that make up a comfortable work environment where employees feel supported.
Suspended Ceiling Installation
Whether it’s your first time installing a suspended ceiling or you’re updating your current system, we’ve summarised the two key steps to fitting your commercial ceiling.
1. Install Your Suspended Ceiling Grid
The first step to your suspended ceiling installation is building your ceiling grid. This consists of several components, including:
- Edge trims
- Main runners
- Cross tees
- Suspension Wire
- Fixings
First, determine the height at which you want your ceiling suspended. Then you can begin to fix your edge trim around the perimeter of the room. Next, install the main runners, cross tees and suspension wire, forming gaps within your ceiling grid for your tiles.
2. Install Your Ceiling Tiles
With your ceiling grid secure, you can fit your suspended ceiling panels. Most ceiling tiles can be slotted into the gaps. We recommend angling each tile up through the gaps and gently lowering them in place. Continue until your suspended ceiling is complete.
Please note: We’ve simplified these steps to provide an overview. For more information, please contact our experts.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Are suspended ceiling tiles fire rated?
The fire rating of your ceiling tiles will depend on the construction and associated gridwork. When it comes to fire safety, we always recommend that you speak to an expert to ensure you’re meeting regulations.
-
When do suspended ceiling tiles need replacing?
Correctly specified ceiling tiles can last a long time. Indicators of when they need replacing include damages to the ceiling panels such as cracks or dents, any stains or discolouring, a build up of mould or ceiling warping/sagging.
-
How do you clean suspended ceiling tiles?
Most ceiling tiles are easy to clean. Simply take a wet cloth and a mild detergent and gently wipe the tile’s surface. Be careful not to over dampen your cloth as too much moisture can damage the appearance and performance of the tile.
-
Are suspended ceiling tiles recyclable?
Certain suspended ceiling panels are recyclable depending on the manufacturer and their sustainability scheme. For more information on where you can recycle your ceiling tiles, contact our team.
-
Are suspended ceiling tiles soundproof?
Whilst no ceiling can be completely soundproof, your suspended ceiling can offer great acoustic treatments. Different suspended ceiling boards will offer varying degrees of noise protection. Look for a sound absorbing ceiling tile to improve speech intelligibility and a sound insulating ceiling tile to improve privacy.
-
Do ceiling tiles contain asbestos?
At Ceiling Tiles Express, we do not supply suspended ceiling tiles with asbestos – giving you peace of mind for your next build.
-
Can suspended ceiling tiles be painted?
We do not recommend that you paint your suspended ceiling as this can impact the performance of your tiles.

How to cut a suspended ceiling tile
If you need to cut your ceiling tiles to fit your grid, we recommend you follow these steps:
- Measure and mark the part of the ceiling tile you will be cutting.
- Carefully score a line across this mark on the tile’s surface.
- Taking care again, cut this mark and then finally separate the tile.
